Unity Barn Raisers works pro-actively to enhance small-town character and rural environment, while nurturing a thriving community-based economy. UBR, which is guided by ten “Underlying Principles”, believes that a community working together can shape its own future, and in so doing, significantly advance the quality of life of its people, both now and for generations to come.

The Town of Unity voted on November 9, 2011 at a Special Town Meeting to accept Communities For Maine's Future bond money for a grant application to help put a new roof on the Unity Community Center and to rehabilitate two long vacant downtown buildings; 38 School Street and the old Grammar School. Party with Santa December 6 5-7 PM at the Unity Community Center
co-hosted by The Barefoot Storyteller. Meet with Santa, photo opportunities (bring your own camera or get a free digital phototree), toymaking workshop, seasonal songs, gifts for children and snacks . This event is free and open to everyone.

Harvest Supper and Pie Contest Saturday November 12 Menu includes Roast Turkey and Roast Lamb, Mashed Potatoes, Squash, Vegetables, Gravy & more!
A delicious, local, traditional Thanksgiving meal with friends, neighbors and community members. All proceeds from this meal support UBR's Veggies For All project. Veggies For All has grown over 20,000 lbs of local, fresh produce to aid in hunger relief efforts in western Waldo County.

10th Annual Halloween Spooktacular Saturday, October 29 from 2-4 PM at the Unity Community Center. Face painting, costume contest, jack-o-lantern carving, trick or treat safety tips, games, crafts, prizes and refreshments.

Day of Service Saturday October 1, 2011 Teams of volunteers, combining Unity College students and townspeople, worked on a variety of community projects and finished up with a record attendance at a Community Meal.

Waldo County Trails Initiative Moves Forward

In November and December representatives from six Waldo County organizations and a few private landowners met at the Unity Community Center to develop a plan for a regional footpath network. The group met with Burnham Martin from the National Park Service’s (NPS), Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program, the community assistance arm of the National Park Service.

The meeting was the result of a successful grant written by Unity Barn Raisers. The NPS’s Martin will work with the group for 18 months to develop and oversee implementation of the group’s trail plan for the region. In addition to private landowners the partnership includes: Unity Barn Raisers, Sebasticook Regional Land Trust, Unity College, Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, Sheepscot Wellspring Land Alliance and Maine Farmland Trust.

The plan is to connect trails in Unity with trails on the Unity College campus and trails on property owned by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) in nearby Thorndike. This past fall Jean English of MOFGA worked with a class of Unity College students to plan and build trails on MOFGA’s 320-acre property. The trail would, of course, also cross land belonging to individual landowners.
